West Virginia law recently changed
December 2, 2025
West Virginia is in the middle of a court fight over religious exemptions. The state health office still grants a religious exemption under a January 14, 2025 executive order. But on December 2, 2025, the state school board told county boards again not to accept them, and public schools did not take them at the start of the 2026 to 2027 school year. On October 5, 2026, the state Supreme Court said it will hear the case. Plan on the medical exemption until the court rules, and call the county board before each school year.
