The papers
The date that matters
Written notice to the principal at least 10 days before the first practice of each season
Do it
Step 1: Make sure the homeschool is registered with the Division of Non-Public Education and has been for 365 days. Keep the homeschool card for last year and this year.
Step 2: Email the principal of the public high school or middle school for your home address. Ask one question: has this district adopted a home school participation policy under the State Board rule? Ask for the answer in writing.
Step 3: If the answer is yes, ask for the written policy. The districts that say yes usually ask for public school classes for at least half of each day (two block periods or three regular classes), with at least one class in person.
Step 4: Before the first practice, hand in a nationally normed test taken in the last year showing grade level, a transcript, an attendance record and the immunization record.
Step 5: Give the principal written notice at least 10 days before the first practice of each sport season.
By: 10 days before the first practice of each season
Step 6: Pass every public school class and stay enrolled without a gap. Leaving starts the 365-day clock again.
Step 7: Ask the athletic director whether the district covers your young achiever under its athletic accident insurance, or needs proof of your own.
Step 8: At sign up, ask about letters, senior night and team photos. Get every answer in writing.
Step 9: If the answer at step 2 is no, see the next door below.
